This is nearly eighteen months old but i still can not find anything as near in depth or newer as well as being directly from Valve. My preferred non steam controller set up uses xpadders's autoconfig feature to load profiles as games are launched (if they do not natively support controller) which switches from my default mouse/desktop mode set along with an empty set/profile switchable by a controller button is a good way to have a working controller in all games and desktop apps as well as steam large and small modes together with big picture mode. you can just add the emulator to your Steam library as a non-Steam game and have access to the controller from thereahh that is a good idea that is.
